Frequently Asked Questions

You can find answers to some frequently asked questions about our home remodeling services. If you cannot find the answer to your question here, feel free to contact us.

How do I get started?

The best way to get started is to contact Pennings Handyman and tell us what you need help with.

You can share a short description of the project, your location, and any photos that may help us understand the work.

From there, we will help determine the right next step

What happens if the project becomes bigger than expected?

That can happen, especially with repairs.

Sometimes we discover hidden damage, older work that was not done correctly, water damage, rot, structural concerns, or other issues once the work begins.

If that happens, we will communicate what we found, explain the options, and help decide the right next step. The project may stay with Pennings Handyman, move from Time & Materials to a fixed-price approach, or move to Pennings & Sons if it becomes a larger project.

Why are some projects billed as Time & Materials instead of fixed price?

Some smaller projects are better handled by the hour because they are simple, practical, or part of a small task list.

For example, hanging a TV, changing a hard-to-reach light bulb, fixing a door, installing hardware, adjusting something in the home, or handling a short list of small items may not need a consultant visit or a fixed-price proposal.

Can you give me a price before the work begins?

Yes.

For larger updates, custom work, or projects with a clear scope, we may provide a fixed-price proposal after a consultant reviews the project.

For smaller Time & Materials work, the work is billed by the hour. These jobs are usually discussed by phone before the visit so we can understand what is involved, plan for the work, and come prepared.

Is there anything Pennings Handyman does not do?

Yes. Some projects may fall outside of what Pennings Handyman is set up to do.

Pennings Handyman is typically not the right fit for major remodels, additions, whole-home renovations, large design projects, or projects that involve major layout changes such as moving walls. Those projects are usually better suited for Pennings & Sons.

What makes Pennings Handyman different from other handyman services?

Pennings Handyman is backed by the experience, quality, and craftsmanship of Pennings & Sons and has already been helping clients with smaller projects for over 30 years.

Why would some Pennings Handyman projects need a consultant visit?

Some projects need more planning than a quick phone call can provide.

A consultant visit allows us to see the space, understand what you want done, review the details, talk through options, and determine what will be needed to complete the work properly.

The goal is to understand the scope of the project well before the work begins.

Can Pennings Handyman provide a fixed-price estimate?

Yes. For larger handyman projects, custom work, updates, or projects that need a more defined scope, we have a consultant come to your home to learn more about the project.

After we understand the work, materials, details, and expectations, we will provide a fixed-price detailed proposal.

This is different from smaller Time & Materials work, which is billed by the hour and is usually intended for smaller tasks that can often be completed during the first visit.

Do you charge by the hour or by the project?

Pennings Handyman can help in two different ways, depending on the type of work.

For the smallest jobs and task-list items, we have a Time & Materials division. This work is billed by the hour and is usually planned through a phone call before the visit.

For larger updates, custom work, or projects with a more defined scope, we will have a consultant come to your home to learn more about the project. From there, we can provide a detailed proposal.

What is the Pennings Handyman Time & Materials division?

The Time & Materials division is part of Pennings Handyman and is designed for the smaller jobs that are often completed in one visit.  Time & Materials work is billed by the hour.

This is a good fit for projects such as hanging a TV, changing a hard-to-reach light bulb, fixing a door, installing hardware, adjusting something that is not working properly, changing fixtures, hanging artwork, or helping with a list of smaller tasks around the home.

Do you only handle small jobs?

Pennings Handyman was created to help with smaller-scale projects, but “small” can mean many different things.

Some projects are very small, such as hanging a TV, changing a hard-to-reach light bulb, fixing a door, installing hardware, hanging shelves, changing fixtures, or completing a short list of repairs. These types of projects may be handled through our Time & Materials division and billed by the hour.

Other Pennings Handyman projects may be larger updates or custom work. This will involve a consultant coming to your home, reviewing the project, talking through the details, and providing a fixed-price estimate.

The important thing to know is that the experience, craftsmanship, care, and support are the same. The project is simply on a smaller scale.

How do I know if I need Pennings Handyman or Pennings & Sons?

You do not need to figure that out on your own. If you contact us, we will listen to what you need and help guide you to the right place.

Is Pennings Handyman part of Pennings & Sons?

Yes. Pennings Handyman is part of the Pennings & Sons family.

Both divisions are built on the same foundation started by our founder, Wilbur Pennings: doing things right the first time. The experience, quality of craftsmanship, care, planning, and support are the same. The main difference is the size, scope, and type of work involved.

Why was Pennings Handyman started?

Pennings Handyman was officially formed in 2012, but the work itself started long before that.

For over 30 years, Pennings & Sons has already been helping clients with smaller projects, repairs, updates, and home improvement needs.

Pennings Handyman allows us to serve those smaller projects with the right team, the right process, and the same commitment to doing things right the first time.
